History of Orient

Orient Watch Company, as it is correctly named, was founded back in 1950, but their history actually goes back even further. The history of Orient Watch Company can actually be traced back to 1901, when Shogoro Yoshida opened a small watch shop in Tokyo. Over the years, the shop became so successful that a larger company was established, and a large factory was also built to meet demand. However, when the Japanese economy struggled after World War II, the company and factory had to close.

But in 1950, Yoshida's old watch company was reborn under a new name, Tama Keiki Company, in the same factory premises as before. Already the following year, they changed the company name, and that was when the name Orient Watch Company was created. Orient was founded with the vision of creating affordable luxury watches where no compromises were made on quality, materials, watch movements, and design. The brand still values these parameters highly, and they have only been strengthened since Orient became part of the Seiko Group. Seiko already held majority shares from 2001, but in 2017, Orient finally became a full member of the Seiko family. Since Seiko came on board, the quality of Orient watches has grown even further, and their popularity has never been higher.

In 1951, Orient also launched a premium version of the brand under the name Orient Star. Orient Star was intended to appeal to the most discerning customers, and the brand quickly grew to become one of the most popular luxury brands in the watch world.

Popular Orient collections and models

Since 1950, Orient has established itself as one of the most respected Japanese watch manufacturers. The brand is particularly known for its dedication to mechanical watch movements and the ability to combine high technical quality with timeless design. To help you find your next watch, we have gathered an overview of the most popular models and collections from the renowned brand.

Orient Kamasu

The Orient Kamasu is perhaps one of the most iconic divers watches in its category. The name Kamasu means barracuda in Japanese, which is reflected in the watch's sharp and aggressive design expression. The model was launched as an upgrade to the previous Mako series and has quickly become a favorite among watch enthusiasts worldwide.

The Kamasu stands out with its sharp hands and prominent indices reminiscent of barracuda teeth. The case measures 42 mm, making it very versatile for most wrists. One of the most important technical upgrades in the Kamasu is the use of scratch-resistant sapphire glass, which is unusual for divers watches in this price range. The watch is water-resistant to 200 meters (20 ATM) and is equipped with a screw-down crown for extra safety underwater.

Orient Bambino

If you are looking for a classic "dress watch," the Orient Bambino is the obvious choice. For over a decade, this collection has been the entry point to mechanical watches for many collectors, thanks to its vintage-inspired look and modern reliability.

The most characteristic feature of the Bambino is the domed mineral glass and the slightly curved dial. This gives the watch a beautiful play of light and a depth that brings to mind the 1950s and 60s. The collection is available in many versions, from minimalist models with simple indices to more complex editions with Roman numerals or "open heart" designs where you can see the watch movement working through the dial.

Most Bambino models come in a 40 mm case, but the brand has also launched smaller 38 mm versions for those who prefer classic proportions. The watch is powered by Orient's own automatic movements, ensuring smooth and reliable operation. Although the Bambino is a dress watch with 30 meters of water resistance, it is built to withstand daily use as a stylish accessory for both suits and everyday outfits.

Orient Stretto

The Orient Stretto is one of the newest additions to the portfolio and was launched to mark the brand's 75th anniversary in 2025. The collection represents a modern interpretation of Orient's design philosophy and serves as a bridge between the classic and the modern.

The name Stretto is taken from the world of music and indicates an increased tempo. The design is characterized by sharp lines and architectural details, such as the wedge-shaped indices. With a case diameter of 38 mm for the standard model, the Stretto hits the modern trend for more compact and elegant men's watches. The Stretto collection exclusively uses sapphire glass, providing superior protection against scratches.

Orient Mako

Since 2004, the Orient Mako has been the backbone of Orient's range of sports watches. This is the watch that proved you don't need to spend a fortune to get a robust and reliable automatic divers watch.

The Mako series is known for its sporty yet discreet look. It is often characterized by its unidirectional rotating bezel with six grooves, making it easy to operate even with gloves. The latest generation, often referred to as Mako 3 or Mako 40, has further refined the design with cleaner dials and more compact dimensions that make it work just as well in the office as on a boat trip.

With 200 meters of water resistance and powerful luminous material (lume) on the hands and indices, the Mako is a true tool watch.

FAQ

Orient is an extremely popular Japanese watch brand, and therefore we receive many questions about their watches. We have gathered the most frequent questions and answered them here on the page:

Which Orient watch should you choose?

Orient produces many different types of watches. Therefore, it is important to think about the purpose of the watch. If you want an elegant dress watch to be used for fine occasions and daily use, it would be natural to choose an Orient Classic or Bambino watch. These watches come in a clean design and at a truly good price. If you want a stylish and robust watch with good water resistance, an Orient divers watch would be the right choice for you.

Are Orient watches of good quality?

Orient watches are of truly good quality. Orient is a Japanese brand in the same family as Seiko, and therefore the quality of the watches will closely resemble Seiko's extremely high quality. Orient uses the same movements as Seiko while the watches are often equipped with sapphire glass. Therefore, you can be sure to receive a watch of truly high quality, where you get a lot of value for your money with Orient.

Are Orient watches waterproof?

The vast majority of Orient watches are water-resistant. Many of the watches have 20 ATM water protection, meaning they can withstand water pressure down to a depth of 200 meters, and they can therefore be used for both diving and swimming. However, not all watches from the brand are waterproof, as some models have water protection of 3 and 5 ATM. Therefore, you must be aware of this if you want a watch with water resistance that can be used for swimming and diving.
